Sketchbook Explorations: Cactus Watercolor

 Azzari Jarrett | Cactus Watercolor

Ever since my trip to Arizona, I've been a little obsessed with cacti and succulents. Experimenting with watercolor to include all the deep greens and blues of these plants - there are so many ways to paint them! Thinking of turning this one into a pattern.

I find keeping a sketchbook, or art journal, so deeply satisfying. I've tried painting on individual pages, and I keep coming back to my sketchbook. I love the fact that I can see progress in my work, and I enjoy flipping through the pages and seeing a collection of my interests all in one place.

March 2018 on Film, Part 2

The second half of March 2018 images captured on 35mm film. I wrote a bit more about my personal photography project for this year here. You can also view the first half of my film images in this post.

Our Spring Break was the last week of March this year.  I had originally packed my digital camera, and realized that I forgot to bring a memory card.  Hence, you will notice that I took more than one image in Asheville, North Carolina simply because I couldn't help but document the beauty that I encountered there. Being flexible with this project and making it work for me.

This month, I used my Pentax K1000 and Kodak UltraMax 400 35mm film for capturing these images.

Film images in April currently underway.  And as always, I will share in this space in May when I develop my film.

Project Life Layouts

As I was updating my documenting projects on my portfolio, I realized that I have not yet shared these layouts I completed in 2017.

I really love these layouts and can't believe I overlooked sharing them on my blog! Better late than never, right?

Azzari Jarrett | 2017 Project Life

Last year, I used a 12x12 album and it was so good to have so much space to work with on my layouts. Here I documented our annual girls' trip in Park City, Utah.

Asheville, North Carolina will always have a special place in my heart. We have had so many special trips there, and my girls love all of the outdoor activities. The mountains are beautiful, and love how I captured that feeling in this layout.

And this is a layout with me and my youngest daughter. She's now 4 years old, but she will always be my baby.

These layouts were created with Design A photo page protectorsSummit Documenter Kit, Sugar Mountain, 4x6 Love Stamp Set, and January 4x6 paper pad

Sketchbook Explorations: Watercolor + Charcoal

 Azzari Jarrett | Sketchbook Explorations

In my effort to share more in more in my own space (and reclaim my time from social media), I wanted to share my sketchbook explorations. I find that carving out a little time each day to create makes me such a better person.

I've really been enjoying watercolors lately.  I have been exploring the concept of combining loose watercolor and other mediums. Today, I used a charcoal pencil to add detail to my piece.

And as always, I find that I don't like a piece immediately when I am finished. That's ok. Not everything that I create, I will like.... But I find that once I walk away and come back to it, I do find something that is appealing.

Simply the act of picking up my paintbrush is so gratifying to me, it is worth it, regardless of outcome.  Looking forward to sharing more.

March 2018 on Film, Part 1

Quiet moments of March 2018, photographed on 35mm film. I wrote a bit more about my personal photography project for this year here.

I love how this project is keeping a camera in my hand. Sometimes I forget how much I love photography. Sometimes it feels like a hassle to carry my film camera wherever I go.  But getting my images back just makes my heart melt. And for that, I am grateful.

The beginning of March found me in Scottsdale, Arizona on a girls' trip. It was extremely hard to take only one photo a day during that trip! Also, Spring has begun to pop up in my images. I love how that is reflected in and around my home.

This month, I used my Pentax K1000 and Kodak UltraMax 400 35mm film for these images.

The second half of March, soon.

Sunrise Easter Service on the Beach

One of the advantages of living on the coast is the ability to attend Easter service on the beach.

We decided to attend the sunrise service, a first for my family. And it did not disappoint. The ocean was the most beautiful backdrop for Easter service.

My parents were visiting for the holiday weekend, and it was their very first visit to the beach since we made our move almost 2 years ago. Needless to say, but they loved it.

April Documenter Workshop - Studio Calico

Azzari Jarrett | Studio Calico April 2018 Documenter Workshop

Studio Calico's April Documenter Workshop begins tomorrow. I contributed one of my 6x8 inch layouts with this month's "Be Happy" documenter kit. I love the copper elements included in this kit.  Coupled with the soft pops of color, really elegant layouts are the result.

You can enroll in the class to see my entire spread.

Weekend Thoughts

 Azzari Jarrett Photography

Although I love Instagram, I have been so frustrated with using the app these past few weeks. The new algorithm and ads make it a place that I no longer want to spend more than a few minutes on. I feel like it has changed. I'm not sure I like the changes. I want to get back to the times that I can scroll through my feed and be inspired by the people I follow, not just those accounts that I "interact" with.  If I clicked "follow", there is a reason for that.

What I can control is this space. I know that it is not going anywhere and I can share here without expectation or likes or follows. Everyone is not screaming at me for attention, which is what I feel when I am on instagram.  On my blog, I can simply share my thoughts and creative endeavors, which I definitely want to do more of in this space.

This past weekend proved to be a relaxing one for me as it is the start of our spring break. I enjoyed some time in my studio, painting and exploring in my sketchbook.

I'm exploring with a number of different mediums to see what feels the best for me and my style. I really like watercolor, and gouache has been a recent favorite. Right now, I'm exploring with gouache and ink.  I really like this combination.

It was overcast, and we passed by a local street fair. My girls aren't particular fans, but I couldn't help but capture a few images.

And Sunday morning.

How I love Sunday mornings. As I was reading the Sunday paper and drinking coffee, I saw this easy recipe for a dutch baby.  It was so simple, and I had all of the ingredients at home, so I decided to try it.  I think I'll add more sugar next time, but it was hit in my house!

With three girls and activities, these types of weekends are rare and I treasure them. Here's to more relaxing days ahead.
