5 Surprising Things I Learned About Documenting While Traveling

On my trip to Paris, I decided to try something a little different. Instead of waiting until I returned home, I decided to bring along some essentials and document while traveling. Kind of the best of both worlds - memories documented without the stress of having to do it when I returned home.

Here are a few things that surprised me while documenting on the go…

5 Surprising Things I Learned About Documenting While Traveling | Azzari Jarrett

1. The airplane folding tray was just enough space to create.

I didn’t intend to use the airplane folding tray as a space to create, but I was so excited to get started. As it turns out, the airplane folding tray is the perfect size. I was able to write down my feelings and intentions about the trip. Be sure to pack your supplies in your carry on bag.

2. Limiting your supplies makes you more creative.

I know it sounds counterintuitive, but when I have my entire stash available, the decision making process about what to use can be daunting. By limiting my supplies, I actually used everything. Not once did I think, “I wish I brought ….” Instead, I made do with what I had.

Here’s what I packed: Midori Traveler’s Notebook, Midori Blank Traveler’s Refill, small palette of gouache, travel paintbrush, black ink pad, date stamp, stickers, Micron journaling pen, Scotch adhesive roller, binder clippers, my current favorite Kelly Purkey stamps, Fuji Instax Share printer (I have an older version), and my HP sprocket. I was able to fit everything in one bag, which was perfect for keeping my supplies together.

3. Collecting ephemera during the trip can be fun.

I really enjoyed picking up ephemera at every place we visited - visitor maps, business cards, receipts, ticket stubs. Usually these things are cumbersome for me collect on trips because I know I have to keep track of them in order to get them home. And they add up quickly! I found that I didn’t mind collecting ephemera because I knew I would be using them soon.

4. Finding a quiet space to journal is essential.

As soon as we got to our apartment, I made sure to find a space that I could spread out and create. It turned out to be this little desk near a window that was perfect for holding all my supplies. At the end of each day, I simply returned to this little area and documented our excursion for the day.

5. Anything is better than nothing.

I realized I could let go of any preconceived notions about perfection. Anything I documented that day would be better than nothing at all. I wasn’t concerned about things matching or how they looked together. I was simply able get my thoughts and pictures documented.

Project Life 2019 | Letting Photos Tell the Story

Sometimes I love combining words + photos in my project life layouts, and other times I like the photos to tell the story.

Azzari Jarrett | Project Life 2019 | Letting the Photos Tell the Story | 6x12 Layout

I included only two journal cards from the Fresh Start Documenter Kit by Studio Calico. And if you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I love to include film in my layouts. For this spread, I printed out three 4x6 inch prints of my favorite film images from my most recent 35mm roll.

I combined them with two photos from my week and I love the simplicity. No fancy embellishments, just the photos.

Sometimes simple is best.

If you find yourself at a loss for words, allow your photos to tell the story.

All photos printed on my Epson Picturemate PM-400 using Epson Semi Gloss photo paper. I’m also using a black 6x12 Album by We R Memory Keepers I purchased a while back, similar option here. Page Protectors are Design H and 6x12 protectors, 4x6 inch pockets. Journal cards are from the Fresh Start Documenter Kit by Studio Calico.

January Layouts with Kelly Purkey Shop

Excited to share that I am on the 2019 Kelly Purkey Shop Creative Team! I absolutely love Kelly’s products, and I am looking forward to combining the beautiful stamps and paper with my images each month.

The January shop update is available today!

Here is a pocket page layout I created with the January kit called “Birthday Wishes”, perfect since January is also my birthday month.

My husband and I spent the week of my birthday is Paris this year. It was a magical trip, and I can’t wait to share more images soon! I chose a few of my favorite photos to pair with the journal cards, stickers, and stamps. I love the baby blue alphas in this kit, and how they pair so nicely with the pinks and corals.

I’m just a couple of weeks in, but the 6x12 format is working nicely for me. I am using this album, but in black, and Design H page protectors.

The Traveler’s Notebook this month is “Full Heart”. I used it to create this spread in my traveler’s notebook:

I also included “the future is bright” 3x8 pattern paper from the “This Year” mini kit, also in this month’s release.

My polaroids from this trip came out so dark and moody. Not the best, but combining film in my layouts will always be my love language.

And the stamps! Love how this “oui”, included in the True Love stamp set, was perfect for adding a little bit of French in my layout.

I used the Brooklyn Heights alpha stamp for “Paris”.

I’m looking forward to sharing my projects with Kelly Purkey Shop with you this year!

2019 Project Life Plans + Modern Printable Journal Cards

Azzari Jarrett | Project Life 2019 Title Page | 6x12 layout

A new year brings a fresh start in many ways. After going strong with project life from 2013 - 2015, my albums from 2016 - 2018 are still left unfinished. I am determined not to quit, and starting fresh in 2019 is just what I need.

I will be using a 6x12 inch album this year. I’ve had this black We R Memory Keepers album for a few years now, and I can’t seem to find this exact one online anymore, it looks to be discontinued. Here is an aqua version, and it looks like Studio Calico has 6x12 inch cloth options.

Here is a look at my 2019 title page:

Azzari Jarrett | 2019 Project Life Title Page | 6x12 layout

I used Design H page protectors for this layout. I’m finding that 6x12 inch pocket pages will be a little hard to find, but I think I will use my fuse tool to create custom page pockets based on what I already have.

I first designed and used these title card designs in 2017, and I love all of the cohesiveness it gives my albums. The “and now let’s begin again” journal card is from Ali Edwards’ January Stories by the Month subscription.

I’m looking at this project as more of a creative mindset. Adjusting and bending, and making this project work for me instead of the other way around. I’m really excited about this year, this new format is just what I need to get me motivated!

If you’d to use these title cards in your layout, you can find them in my shop. Definitely let me know if you decide to use them.

And just for fun, my title pages from 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2015.

Adventure Story Theme

It's been a while since I've shared a story theme layout using Ali Edwards's story kits. Here is the latest layout I completed, this one is called "Adventure".

Azzari Jarrett | Adventure Story Theme

I decided to document our family's spring break RV camping trip to Asheville, North Carolina. My husband took this photo and I love how it captures the RV with the mountains in the background. It was a pretty epic trip!

Azzari Jarrett | Adventure Story Theme

I used one of three sticky patches, "Adventure" at the top of the layout. I also used phrases from the sticker sheet to describe our trip.

Azzari Jarrett | Adventure Story Theme

I adhered the acrylic "adventure" directly over my photo to emphasis. Rounding out the layout was a chipboard sticker and journaling. I also like to stamp the date I complete the layout, regardless of how long it has been!

You can check out more of my other story theme layouts: UpGoLittle ThingsClickMagicFirstsGatherAM/PM, and Numbers.

Week In The Life 2018

Last week, I participated in Week In the Life, started by Ali Edwards.  I have completed this project every year since 2013, and I love to look back at my albums at how much my "normal" has changed.

This year, I wanted to be an observer of my life.  Instead of telling "all of the stories" I wanted to concentrate on telling one story for each day.  I thought this would be appropriate since I have chosen to use a 3x8 album to document my week.

Here are my photos + words from last week.

Azzari Jarrett | Week In The Life

MONDAY |  After getting my girls up and dressed and off to school, I have my second cup of coffee while I water all of plants in our home. I absolutely love black and white stripes, bonus points for a midi dress.

TUESDAY | Overcast this morning and I didn’t feel the best, but there’s very little I let get in the way of my morning run. I never regret going. I always regret when I don’t. 3 miles this morning, while I made a mental list of everything I need to accomplish today. Food for my soul.

WEDNESDAY | My youngest daughter has an extra hour of school on Wednesday’s. I spend the majority of my day in my studio - emails, working on new designs, layouts, photography projects and prints.

Azzari Jarrett | Week In The Life

THURSDAY | Sometimes it is so hard for me to say yes. When she wants to stop at our local Arboretum and visit the koi pond and Japanese tea house, I thought about everything else I had to do today. I realized all those things would still be there tomorrow. I said yes, and I’m so glad that I did.

Azzari Jarrett | Week In The Life

FRIDAY | Ending the school week with an evening at the beach. I cherish the simple joys, the experiences, and not “the things” in my life. And I’m so happy that my girls have each other. I always wanted a sister growing up. Instead, I am blessed to be a mother of 3 sisters. And if they still get along as adults, I will consider my job done

Azzari Jarrett | Week In The Life

SATURDAY | Saturday was a blur of being on the road, running weekend errands. I did appreciate all of the love I received from my family today. I think every weekend should include Mother's Day.

Azzari Jarrett | Week In The Life

SUNDAY | Starting Mother’s Day early this morning with paddle boarding while the sun rises. Looking forward to a relaxed day surrounded by my husband and daughters.

All photos taken with my iPhone and edited with VSCO.

I'm looking forward to bringing these photos and words together in a 3x8 album, which I will share soon!

Project Life Layouts

As I was updating my documenting projects on my portfolio, I realized that I have not yet shared these layouts I completed in 2017.

I really love these layouts and can't believe I overlooked sharing them on my blog! Better late than never, right?

Azzari Jarrett | 2017 Project Life

Last year, I used a 12x12 album and it was so good to have so much space to work with on my layouts. Here I documented our annual girls' trip in Park City, Utah.

Azzari Jarrett | 2017 Project Life

Asheville, North Carolina will always have a special place in my heart. We have had so many special trips there, and my girls love all of the outdoor activities. The mountains are beautiful, and love how I captured that feeling in this layout.

Azzari Jarrett | 2017 Project Life

And this is a layout with me and my youngest daughter. She's now 4 years old, but she will always be my baby.

These layouts were created with Design A photo page protectorsSummit Documenter Kit, Sugar Mountain, 4x6 Love Stamp Set, and January 4x6 paper pad

April Documenter Workshop - Studio Calico

Azzari Jarrett | Studio Calico April 2018 Documenter Workshop

Studio Calico's April Documenter Workshop begins tomorrow. I contributed one of my 6x8 inch layouts with this month's "Be Happy" documenter kit. I love the copper elements included in this kit.  Coupled with the soft pops of color, really elegant layouts are the result.

You can enroll in the class to see my entire spread.
